Birth Options

Parents looking at ultrasoundAs you plan for the birth of your baby, you can take steps to help your labor go more smoothly.

It is best to discuss your questions about labor with your health care provider before the time comes:

  • When should I call my doctor / midwife?
  • How can I reach the doctor / midwife after office hours?
  • Should I go directly to the hospital or call the office first?
  • Are there any special steps I should follow when I think I’m in labor?

The best way to prepare for your baby’s arrival is to have a personalized and specific birth plan in place. A birth plan is a document that tells your medical team your preferences for such things as how to manage labor pain, who will be present in the room and breastfeeding preferences. Of course, you cannot control every aspect of labor and delivery, and you’ll need to stay flexible in case something comes up that requires your birth team to depart from your birth plan. Be sure to share this plan with your physician or provider/midwife.
