Program Services

Patients who have experienced a brain injury work with an individualized treatment team that is specially-trained in head injury rehabilitation.

The physiatrist, a physician specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation, manages the interdisciplinary group that includes: the patient, family members, rehabilitation nurses, rehabilitation counselors, case managers, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and therapeutic recreation specialists. In addition, the team may include dietitians, neuropsychologists, respiratory therapists and a chaplain. Additional medical and surgical specialties are easily accessible at Touro Infirmary, a full-service hospital.

Touro BI program also offers:

• Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurses
• Behavior Modification Plans
• Specialized wheelchairs
• Specialized therapy equipment (tilt table, body weight support system, standing frame, FES bike, nustep)
• Technology integrated therapy (ipads, Wii)
• Community reintegration/Therapeutic Community Outings
• Vital Stim (non-invasive external electrical stimulation therapy for the treatment of swallowing difficulties)
• Low vision clinic
• Easy Alley (simulated community environment)
