DAY BEFORE SURGERY
• Carry out all special instructions from your doctor. Tell TASC staff of all medications prescribed by your doctor, including any herbal supplements or over-the-counter medications you may be taking. Ask your doctor or anesthesiologist about taking medication on the day of your surgery.
• Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. This includes water, gum, mints, candy, etc. This precaution is very important and is in place to ensure your safety. Your surgery may be cancelled if you fail to follow these instructions.
• Arrange transportation. An adult friend or family member must accompany you home. Patients are not permitted to leave alone after surgery.
• Relax and get a good night’s sleep!
DAY OF SURGERY
• Arrive promptly. Arriving at your scheduled time will help ensure your procedure is performed on time.
• Parking is provided at Alright Parking Garage. Park in the Alright Garage, adjacent to the Touro Medical Office Building, 3525 Prytania Street. TASC is on the first floor. Parking is complimentary with validation.
• Bring your identification and insurance card.
• Leave all jewelry, money and other valuables at home or with a companion.
• Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to take off and put on. You will put on a hospital gown before your procedure. Please do not wear makeup, jewelry, nail polish, body piercings or hair pins.
• Dentures, partial plates, contact lenses and other prostheses must be removed before surgery. Please bring appropriate containers for these items.
AFTER SURGERY
• After surgery, you will be taken to the recovery area. The nurse overseeing your recovery will care for you until you are released by the TASC anesthesiologist.
• Your nurse will discuss post-operative instructions. Written post-operative directions and prescriptions may also be given at this time. You cannot drive, sign any legal documents or operate machinery.
• Return home. You will not be discharged unless you have an adult caregiver, family, or friend to accompany you home.
AT HOME
• Follow your doctor’s instructions about rest, medications and diet. Make yourself comfortable and remember that you may require rest for the remainder of the day.
• We suggest a responsible adult (18 or older) stay with you for the first 24 hours or longer if needed.
• Call your doctor if you have questions about your recovery.
