Newly Diagnosed
New Patient Orientation
For many people, a diagnosis of cancer is overwhelming. Lacking sufficient information to make decisions, not knowing where to get help, or who to lean on for support are common challenges following diagnosis. It is for this reason the new patient orientation was created. This program, offered through the Touro Supportive Cancer Care Center, provides you with the information, resources, and support you need to better prepare for what could be next.
The new patient orientation program is designed to help you “proactively” address your needs before they get out of control. The primary objectives of this program are to help you:
• Become more knowledgeable about cancer
• Learn ways to cope with cancer
• Address your supportive care (non-medical) needs
• With referrals to the supportive care services you need
• Know where to turn for assistance when you need it
The new patient orientation session is conducted over one hour held in a private office and is offered as a free service to Touro cancer patients. To schedule an appointment for an orientation session, contact Lori Dean, RN, OCN, Cancer Care Navigator, at 504-897-7014.

Cancer Care Navigator
A Cancer Care Navigator as defined by the National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators (NCONN) is “a professional whose clinical nursing expertise guides patients, families, and their caregivers to informed decision-making; collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team to allow for timely cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and increased supportive care across the cancer continuum.” The Cancer Care Navigator at Touro, Lori Dean, RN, OCN, embodies this definition.
Individuals receiving treatment at Touro are offered the services of an oncology certified, registered nurse (RN) who helps them “navigate” the many challenges they face following a cancer diagnosis. As a resource to overcome obstacles to cancer care, Touro’s Cancer Care Navigator assists patients with a wide variety of needs through:
• problem-solving
• sharing information
• coordinating appointments
• finding resources
• locating appropriate services
• providing support
Touro's navigator is available to assist you throughout your cancer treatment and beyond.
