Coping With Physical Changes

Adjusting to changes in appearance can be difficult; however, there are ways to learn cope with body changes. Here are some suggestions from the National Cancer Institute to consider:

  • Recognize the changes in your appearance are real and grieve the losses you have experienced
  • Look for new ways to enhance your appearance—a new haircut, hair color, makeup or clothing can improve how you look and how you feel about yourself
  • Try to focus on the ways that coping with cancer has made you stronger, wiser, and more resilient
  • Recognize that you are more than cancer—know you have worth, no matter how you look or what happens in your life
  • Seek out help from others in developing a strategy to improve your appearance and make you feel better about yourself
