Disaster: Will Your Nurses Be Prepared? (Lessons from Katrina)
This lesson from Hurricane Katrina is based on the Touro Rehab experience and has been prepared to help others to better plan for possible future disaster. Although Touro was in full compliance with standards of JCAHO and CARF for disaster planning and evacuation and had participated in state and local disaster drills prior to the storm, preparation was insufficient. Much effort has gone into redesigning our standards for future disasters, and it is our hope that those who read our story will be better prepared, that discussions will be opened in other facilities, and that families and patients will be more easily managed everywhere as a result of this study. 1.25 CEUs
