“Equipment can be had anywhere, but the human factor is what makes the difference.” — Note from a Touro patientIn the New Orleans community, we hold many things close to our hearts — our rich history, our dynamic music scene and our one-of-a-kind recipes. Touro Infirmary is privileged to be an institution with a special place in the heart of this community, and we have spent nearly 160 years strengthening this role as a vital healthcare resource.

Ask our patients and they will tell you that Touro is a special place where the staff is caring and willing to help. Our nurses, physicians, housekeepers, bookkeepers, volunteers and everyone else in between share that “special touch” that our patients see, every day. Our donors are a very important part of our team. They are our partners in ensuring excellent care for the community.

The Touro Infirmary Foundation is dedicated to supporting the hospital’s strategic initiatives, including expansion in the key areas of Oncology and Rehabilitation.

Cancer is a disease that truly hits home for nearly every family. Half of all men and one-third of all women in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetimes. Since Hurricane Katrina devastated several area hospitals, Touro has been treating nearly twice as many cancer patients. To meet these growing demands, Touro is expanding its cancer program.

Touro Rehabilitation Center

Nurse and therapist helping patient with recovery
The Touro Rehabilitation Center (TRC) is home to nationally recognized programs for brain and spinal cord injury. The only hospital in the country accredited in several subspecialties, TRC’s patients are more acute, but achieve more independence than patients both regionally and nationally. However, the TRC has only 11 private rooms. Due to the lack of private rooms, patient placement is a juggling act, creating a constant waiting list that averages 20-plus patients.

The construction of an updated unit with 14 private rooms is critical. This expansion will also allow for additional space that is vital to rehabilitation, such as gyms and a dining room/kitchen where patients re-learn important life skills.
