What is Lymphedema?

An estimated 2.5 million people in the United States suffer from lymphedema, a condition caused by the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the body that causes swelling in the arms or legs.  The swelling can develop soon after surgery or radiation treatment or many months or even years later.  The most common form of lymphedema in the United States is secondary lymphedema which most often affects those who have survived cancer and have undergone surgery and/or radiation of the lymph nodes.
