Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) treatment planning.
IMRT delivers a precisely calculated beam of radiation directly to a tumor. A team of physicians, physicists and radiation therapists work with a computer to create a treatment plan. The IMRT system allows the team to calibrate the beam therapy with an accuracy that was never before available.
The pinpoint accuracy of IMRT has several advantages for the patient. The most significant advantage is the ability to maximize the dose to the cancerous tumor while sparing the surrounding tissue from unnecessary exposure. Patients undergoing IMRT treatment generally experience fewer side effects from the high-dose radiation. This enables the patient to lead a more normal lifestyle during his or her course of treatment.
