Third Eye Retroscope for Colonoscopies
Touro Infirmary now offers a new technique in colonoscopies, the Third Eye Retroscope. This new technique has been shown to improve the detection of pre-cancerous polyps by up to 23 to 25 percent. Used during colonoscopy, the Third Eye Retroscope is a small, innovative imaging device that provides a backward view of the colon with the forward view of a standard colonoscope. Operating much like a “rearview mirror,” the Third Eye Retroscope helps physicians see adenomas in potential “blind spots,” such as behind the many natural folds and curves within the colon.
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Screenings, such as colonoscopies, allow more colorectal cancers to be found earlier, when the disease is easier to cure. Even more cases can be prevented if pre-cancerous polyps can be removed before they become malignant, making colonoscopy an important tool in the fight against colorectal cancers.
