Over the last 161 years, Touro Infirmary has been uniquely fortunate to benefit from the generations of families who served Touro as physicians, volunteers, and staff members. As Touro’s first Director of Development in 1977, Margaret Epstein embarked upon a mission to ensure the dedication of these families would never be forgotten. Margaret created the Judah Touro Society (JTS) and Award in order to recognize those most instrumental in Touro’s success. To date, the JTS has raised more than $10 million for the hospital and its patients. Margaret also created the Touro Family Birthing Center Baby Tile Wall. This collection of whimsical tiles has been one of the hospital’s longest running fundraisers, raising over $1 million for the hospital’s Family Birthing Center. Margaret was also the force behind the creation of the 50 Year Doctor's Award, the Heritage Wall, and was instrumental in the creation of the Touro Infirmary Foundation Fundraising Gala. Since the first Gala in 2009, the event has raised over $1 million for the hospital’s Cancer, Rehabilitation, and Family Birthing Centers. Notably, all of the programs Margaret created remain in existence at the hospital today.

Margaret’s history of service to the community extends far beyond Touro. Margaret has served as vice president, board member and chairman of the metropolitan group for the United Way of Greater New Orleans, board member of WYES, and member of the steering committee for Tulane Summer Lyric Theater. She received the Volunteer Activist Award of the National Center for Voluntary Action, and is listed in Who’s Who in American Women. She is the founder of WYES-TV’s Teleboosters. She was vice President of the National Council of Jewish Women, president of Newman Parents, and a board member of Kingsley House and the New Orleans Speech and Hearing Center. She has also served on the Citizens Advisory Council for Heard Start, the Mayor’s Citizens Advisory Committee on Housing Improvement and the Maison Blanche Consumers Council.
