Please allow time for traffic and parking. We ask that you arrive at the Touro Radiology Department (3rd floor, hospital) or Touro Imaging Center (as instructed by scheduling) at least 15 minutes prior to your exam for insurance verification and final exam preparation. 

If for any reason you are unable to keep this appointment, please try and give 24 hours notice. If you need to cancel or reschedule please call (504) 897-8885. Our staff is available Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. – 5:30 p.m., to assist you with any questions or concerns that you might have.


Test Preparation Instructions

Barium Enema:
Before a barium enema exam, you'll be instructed to empty your colon. Any residue in your colon may obscure the X-ray images or be mistaken for an abnormality.

Bowel Prep Required:
DO NOT stop taking your medication. All medications may be taken with a small sip of water. Doing so could reduce the effectiveness of your medications. 

The day before the exam: 
  • You will be on a liquid diet for 24 hours. You can have clear soup (bouillon), clear juices, sugar free gelatin or tea. You must be able to see through the liquid. You are NOT allowed to have any sugar, dairy (including milk or cream) or solid foods. 
  • At 2:30 p.m. drink a 10 oz. bottle Tidrate Solution (Magnesium Citrate.)
  • At 5 p.m. have a liquid dinner and take three yellow Tridrate (Bisacodyl) tablets with water. Do not chew the tablets.
  • Throughout the day drink water as instructed: 8ounces of water at 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m. 
Morning of exam:
  • Patient should not eat or drink.
  • Administer Tridrate (Bisacodyl) suppository.

Barium swallow, Upper GI series, Small bowel x-ray:

DO NOT stop taking your medication. All medications may be taken with a small sip of water.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR DIABETIC PATIENTS?

The following is the preparation for your exam:
  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight

IVP (Intravenous pyelogram):
DO NOT stop taking your medication. All medications may be taken with a small sip of water. 

If you are diabetic taking Glucophage, Clucovance or any other medication containing Metformin, you must discontinue them for 48 hours after this exam. Please ask your technologist for the date and time to resume medication. 

The day before the exam: 
  • You will be on a liquid diet for 24 hours. You can have clear soup, clear juices, sugar free gelatin or tea. You are NOT allowed to have any sugar, dairy (including milk or cream) or solid foods. 
  • At 3 p.m. take 1.5 oz. of castor oil (or other prep ordered by your physician)
Morning of exam:
  • Patient should not eat or drink prior to the exam
