Education and Support

By attending a support group, you’ll find people with problems similar to yours. Cancer support groups can offer you help dealing with your emotions, practical information about treatment, and tips on how to adjust to life beyond cancer. The key is finding a support group that matches your needs and one in which you feel connected to group members.

There are different types of cancer support groups designed for different purposes. In general, support groups are led by a professional such as a psychologist, counselor, nurse, or social worker, and emphasize education, emotional support, and the shared experiences of group members. Some support groups are specific to the type of disease, such as breast cancer, while others have a broader focus.

In addition to traditional support groups, the Internet offers online support. Telephone-conference groups and peer-to-peer support by phone are available through several national organizations, like the American Cancer Society and CancerCare. Internet and telephone options enable you to participate in group support without having to leave your home.
