Planned Giving through the Touro Infirmary Foundation is a great way to show your continued support of Touro's mission and its commitment to patient care, health education and community service. It offers a way to leave your mark on a community in which you believe and support. Planned giving donations continue to lay a foundation on which to build the future of the hospital and ensure the health and well-being of our community.

What is Planned Giving?

New Law Extends Giving Opportunities: As part of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 signed into law Oct. 3, 2008, Congress restored and extended the Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA) charitable rollover giving incentive through 2009. The IRA Charitable Rollover is a tax incentive that allows individuals aged 70½ and older to donate up to $100,000 from their traditional, SEP and/or Roth IRAs to public charities without having to count the distributions as taxable income. As the name suggests, Planned Giving is a term given to charitable gifts that require planning before the donations are made. They can provide valuable tax benefits and/or income for life. The benefits of funding a planned gift, whether a donor uses cash or other assets, make this type of giving a popular one for both the donor and the charity.

What are the benefits of planned gifts?

Potential benefits of planned giving include the following:

  • An increase in current income for the donor or others
  • A reduction in the donor's income tax
  • The ability to pass assets to heirs at a reduced tax cost
  • The option to make significant donations to charity
  • A possible avoidance of capital gains tax
