Dr. Sheryl Martin-Schild, MD, PhD, is a New Orleans native and has spent the majority of her training and career in New Orleans. Prior to joining Touro, Dr. Martin-Schild served as an Associate Professor of Neurology and Director of the Stroke Program at Tulane University School of Medicine for eight years where she developed and award winning comprehensive stroke center.  She currently also serves as the Stroke Medical Director for the New Orleans East Hospital.  Dr. Martin-Schild enjoys mentoring medical students and residents in healthcare outcomes research in acute stroke. Her number one priority is her patients and making sure they receive the best care during and after their hospital stay. Dr. Martin-Schild is the State Medical Director for Stroke of the Louisiana Emergency Response Network (LERN) and enjoys traveling to facilities throughout Louisiana, educating healthcare providers and the public on stroke risk factors, prevention, and acute treatment.

Dr. Navalkele, or “Dr. Digs” is a board certified vascular neurologist who joined the Touro Stroke team in January 2017.  Prior to joining Touro Infirmary, she served as Assistant Professor of Neurology and Neurology Clerkship Director for second year medical students at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Digs  serves as the Louisiana Emergency Response Network [LERN] Stroke Champion for Region 3 and medical co-director of Neurology and Stroke services at New Orleans East Hospital. She has extensive experience in stroke care and treatment, stroke research, and education.

Ramy El Khoury, MDRamy El Khoury, MD

Dr. El Khoury is certified in Neurology, Vascular Neurology, and Neural Repair and Rehabilitation. After finishing medical school in Ireland, he completed his residency and fellowship training in New York and Houston. He has fulfilled leadership positions across New Orleans in various directorship roles, including the Medical Director for Stroke in Region 9 for the state.  Dr. El Khoury is committed to improving neurological care and patient outcomes. Dr. El Khoury is fluent in French and Arabic.

Laurie Schluter, MSN, RN, FNP, ANVPLaurie Schluter, MSN, RN, FNP, ANVP

Laurie Schluter is a Louisiana native who completed a Baccalaureate in Nursing in 1993 and a Master’s in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner certification in 1998. Her experience includes ICU, Home Health, Geriatrics, Family Practice, Urgent Care and Inpatient Rehabilitation. She discovered an interest in vascular neurology after joining Tulane’s Stroke Program in 2009. Completing NETSMART in 2011 and achieving board certification as an Advanced Neurovascular Practitioner have solidified her dedication to stroke care. Today, Laurie provides neurovascular care and stroke program development at both Touro and New Orleans East Hospital. Her passion is providing stroke education to members of the clinical team and the community.  She enjoys attending football games and concerts, dining in NOLA and traveling in her spare time.

Melissa Freeman, MPH, RNMelissa Freeman, MPH, RN

Melissa moved to New Orleans from Virginia in 2005 to pursue her Master’s degree at Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. New Orleans has since been home for Melissa.  Melissa received her BSN from Villanova in 2002 and has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including orthopedics, neurology, infection prevention, and hospital quality. Melissa formerly served as Stroke Program Coordinator at Tulane Medical Center and has assisted facilities across the country in building Stroke Programs, and helping institute TeleStroke programs across the Gulf South.  In 2015, she was awarded “Healthcare Hero” by New Orleans City Business. Melissa is very excited to join the Touro team.
