Cancer treatment & supportive cancer care
Cancer treatment may involve surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy, often used in conjunction with one another. Touro’s cancer program offers these treatment options along with clinical research trials. Working together with your doctor, you will discuss your options and develop an individualized treatment plan.
Our supportive cancer care program provides mental, emotional, spiritual, and social support from the time your cancer is diagnosed through treatment and beyond. At Touro, we take an approach that focuses on the whole person, not just the disease.
Survivorship care & cancer rehabilitation
The Cancer Survivorship Program at Touro gives patients a chance to meet one-on-one with an oncology nurse, whose expertise includes cancer care and the specific issues survivors may face during treatment and in the years following.
Touro’s Cancer Rehabilitation Program was created to help survivors physically and emotionally heal from the side effects of cancer treatments. We provide our patients with the most comprehensive rehabilitation care available, covered by most health insurance providers. Cancer rehab helps survivors regain their health and get their lives back on track.
Talking to your doctor about cancer
Being diagnosed with cancer often means you will have several doctors and nurses involved in your care. Therefore, it is important to recognize early on what you need in the way of information and how you want that information presented to you. Good communication is critical to making informed decisions about your medical care and the doctors at Touro are more than happy to help you in any way possible.
Consider the following tips to help you when talking with your doctors and nurses:
- Decide on how much information you want to know and tell this to your doctors
- Write down your questions in advance so you are certain to ask them
- When you have a question, ask it—then, make sure you fully understand the answer
- Write down the answers so you can accurately recall the information you were given
- Whenever possible, have a family member or close friend with you when meeting with doctors
- If you do not understand what your doctor is telling you, ask him/her to explain it using “non-medical” language
- Address any communication problems directly with your doctor
