A supportive program for stroke patients
The Stroke Specialty Program at Touro Rehabilitation Center offers a unique, patient focused recovery program. A stroke, whether the result of a blood clot or bleed in the brain, can affect an individual’s independence through changes in mobility, communication, coordination, memory and vision. A dedicated treatment team of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation doctors, certified rehabilitation nurses and specialized therapists are committed to providing individualized care to improve the quality of life for adults following a stroke by increasing function, encouraging independence, and facilitating a safe return to the community.
Services provided
Patients at a variety of functional levels receive comprehensive interdisciplinary
care targeting personalized patient and family goals. This family-oriented
program will develop and execute individual treatment plans to address
physical, cognitive, behavioral, and social interaction skills, while
working toward achieving realistic educational, vocational, social and/or
leisure goals.
A patient’s treatment team may consist of:
- Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Physician
- Certified Rehabilitation Nurses
- Rehabilitation Case Manager
- Physical, Occupational, and Speech-Language Pathologists
- Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
- Behavior Specialist
- Dietitian
- Respiratory Therapists
- Neuropsychologist
- Chaplain
- Other specialists from Touro Hospital may be consulted, based on individual needs
Stroke patient and caregiver family education
Stroke Family Education Day is held the first Monday of each month in the
M6 Conference Room from 9:00am-3:30pm.
Education and training are key components of the Stroke Specialty Program.
In order to prepare caregivers for assisting patients at home, the interdisciplinary
rehab team will educate on a variety of topics including:

- Nutrition
- Role of Physical Therapy after a Stroke
- Role of Occupational Therapy after a Stroke
- Role of Speech Therapy after a Stroke

2019 Stroke Family Ed Day Schedule
Support for patients and caregivers
A Neuro Support Group for patients and caregivers who have had a stroke or brain injury is held on the first Tuesday of each month in the M6 Conference Room from 3:30pm-4:30pm. It is free and open to the public as a resource and support system following a stroke or brain injury.
Nutrition class
On the first Tuesday of each month from 12:00pm-1:00pm, a nutrition class is led by a registered dietitian. This class is specifically geared towards individuals who have had a stroke or peripheral artery disease (PAD). Nutritional education specific to improving blood glucose, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are covered. Participants are encouraged to ask questions or voice concerns regarding nutritional topics. Stroke referrals are accepted based on specific qualifications. For information on referring a patient to the stroke program, please call 504.897.8560 or email StrokeProgram@lcmchealth.org.
Outpatient services
The Neuro Rehabilitation Center at Touro specializes in the treatment of patients with brain injury, strokes, spinal cord injuries or other neurological injury or illness using a community integrative approach. The Neuro Rehabilitation Center team focuses on returning the patient to the highest level of functioning possible, while emphasizing strengths and accommodating unique needs. The Neuro Rehabilitation Center’s team members are trained to utilize a variety of functional outcome measures to ensure our clients are performing at optimum levels.
