At Touro’s Comprehensive Wound Healing Center, an expert team of specially trained physicians, nurses, and clinical support staff is available to address your chronic wound care needs using the latest technology and techniques.

There are many factors that may be delaying or preventing your wound from healing. With this in mind, Touro’s wound care team performs a complete history and physical exam which allows us to develop an individualized treatment plan specific to each patient’s needs.

Touro’s Comprehensive Would Healing Center works with each referring physician to develop a specialized care plan for treating a variety of problem wounds, some of which include:

  • Wounds that have not healed in several weeks
  • Diabetes-related foot or ankle ulcers

Each type of wound requires a different kind of care. The healthcare providers at Touro will determine the best kind of treatment.

The treatment plan we recommend may include some or a combination of the following:

  • X-rays
  • Consult for surgical debridement to remove infected tissue and bone
  • Application of specialty dressings or ointments
  • Consult for nutritional supplements or counseling
  • Laboratory studies
  • Vascular studies
  • Antibiotic therapy
  • Use of crutches, wheelchairs, or other off-loading techniques
  • Consult for physical therapy

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Touro’s Comprehensive Wound Healing Center specializes in the hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients with chronic wounds and blood circulation. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has many benefits for patients including wound healing, stimulation of white blood cells, new blood vessel formation, and protection of damaged tissue.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is often used to treat wounds such as abdominal stomas, pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and other hard-to-heal wounds. Patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy will be placed in a comfortable chamber and will breathe in 100% oxygen. The pure oxygen will enter the bloodstream to stimulate small blood vessel growth, promote new skin growth, and help fight infections. The chamber is pressurized as recommended by a patient’s doctor.

Conditions that may warrant hyperbaric oxygen therapy include:

  • Acute carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Gas embolism
  • Progressive necrotizing fasciitis
  • Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
  • Actinomycosis
  • Decompression illness
  • Crush injuries
  • Failed skin grafts
  • Acute arterial embolism or thrombus
  • Diabetic ulcers
